Competence and Learning

Project C - Competence and Learning aims to develop and maintain a competency-based modular language for continuous learning and improvement. This language - composed of components, indices and methods - provides a robust structure for defining roles, developing competence-based learning materials and introducing/improving competence certification and micro-accreditation programmes.

Microprojects

Project C includs two types of microprojects. The first is to develop and continually expand the needed concepual structures, and the second applies these concepts to develop Defined Role Matrices, generate Digital Competence Benchmarks, and Micro-Accreditation Models.

BIM Comepetency Benchmarking - Qatar (2020)

Completed - A QNRF funded project (multiple collaborators)

This Competency Benchmarking Project aimed to assess the BIM competency of individual practitioners across Qatar. Data was collected through the Individual Discovery assessment modules hosted on BIMexcellence.com (now assessor.io).
This BIMe Initiative project was led by Dr. Bilal Succar (ChangeAgents AEC) and Prof. Mohamad Kassem (Newcastle University, UK) in collaboration with prominent researchers from Qatar University (Project Lead) and Teeside University (UK).

The three-year project was completed in 2020.

BIM Roles and Competencies - Brazil (2025)

Ongoing - In collaboration with BIM Forum Brazil (BFB)

This project aims to identify the competency profiles of multiple key roles and their responsibilities in an evolving digital transformation landscape.

The project will provide the structures and methods necessary to accurately define BIM Professional Roles (e.g. BIM Manager) and BIM-focused Disciplinary Roles (e.g. Senior Architect) based on the modular language used across BIMe Initiative projects. These 'BIM' roles and their multiple competency profiles will be validated through national workshops throughout Brazil.

This project is a collaborative effort and a shared knowledge output between the BIM Excellence Initiative (BIMei) and BIM Forum Brazil (BFB). While some of the efforts and deliverables are supported by BFB sponsors, most activities are conducted as a volunteering effort by BIMei + BFB members (many are members of both entities).

The project is conducted throughout 2025 and the results will be first published by BFB.

For more information, please contact BFB Working Group 6 responsible for developing the "Structure of Educational Objectives and BIM Competencies" across Brazil. BFB project objectives include delivering "a conceptual scheme to establish BIM Educational Objectives and Competencies focusing on the Brazilian market" and the expected benefits are to "establish a reference that guides minimum content for different professional training in BIM; promote the training of professionals trained in BIM; establish a reference for certification of BIM professionals; sensitize learners to the skills and knowledge they need to develop." Derived from the BIM Forum Brazil website.
