Macro Adoption Project

The Macro Adoption Project aims to assist policymakers in developing and/or assessing the macro BIM diffusion policies, strategies and plans within their respective marketsThe project includes multiple microprojects (refer to 103in) and has the following main objectives:

  1. Identify the key metrics that provide the best adoption indicators across regions
  2. Monitor the diffusion of BIM across countries through repeat assessments and data analytics
  3. Monitor the effect of policies and mandates on BIM adoption and stakeholder behaviour
  4. Collate and openly share the BIM adoption lessons learned with all stakeholders
  5. Assist policymakers and educators in evaluating, developing or improving their BIM adoption strategies and educational frameworks

The macros adoption project relies on over 5 years of background research with multiple peer-reviewed papers published to date. Each microproject - refer to ongoing and completed studies - are launched in collaboration with global Collaborating Partners (industry associations, universities and policymakers).

The project will deliver a Macro Adoption Report and a Macro Adoption Guide to facilitate BIM policy development, and a dedicated Online Dashboard to openly share raw Macro Assessment data (e.g. see Ireland's 2017 data set and Spain's 2018 data set) for all to benefit and freely reuse.


Project Team

The BIMe Initiative Macro Adoption Project is co-led by:

  2. Prof Mohamad Kassem of Newcastle University (Newcastle, UK)
  3. AProf Eduardo Toledo of the University of São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil)
  4. Dr Danny Murguia of the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK)
  5. Dr Cristiane Magalhães of Firjan (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

Macro Study Types

The Macro Adoption Project conducts multiple concurrent assessments. These assessments are of three types:

Type 1: Macro Assessment - Policy Environment studies aim to establish whether, when, and how policies are being enacted by policy makers to facilitate BIM adoption and digital transformation across a defined market. Data will be collected through by invitation surveys and facilitated workshops. Participants in this study are government agencies and macro-policy influencers from not-for-profit institutions.

Type 2Macro Assessment - Education Landscape studies aim to establish the diffusion of digital transformation topics, collaborative educational practices, and relevant information management qualifications across educational institutions and programmes within a defined market. Data will be collected through by invitation surveys conducted in collaboration with prominent local institutions.

Type 3: Macro Assessment – Organizational Adoption studies aim to establish the adoption of digital transformation tools, workflows, and protocols within organisations across a defined market. In collaboration with local partners (including not-for-profit and for-profit entities), data will be collected using open surveys targeted at a sample of small and large organisations across disciplines and specialties.
